Dear Everyone,
A few weeks ago, I asked readers to tell me what songs they would place on the soundtrack to Gabriel’s Inferno. I was pleasantly surprised when I received tweets and messages from readers around the world, recommending various music. I’ve included references to several songs in the novel, but I was interested in hearing what the readers thought would make a good soundtrack.
The song that stood out amongst the recommendations was No Light, No Light by Florence + The Machine. Rebecca C. sent the song to me, which you can listen to here.
The lyrics that caught my attention: “No light, no light in your bright blue eyes. I never knew daylight could be so violent. The revelation in the light of day …”
I’m still meditating on the violence of daylight.
Readers recommended many different kinds of music and I found myself introduced to several new bands. Here’s a list of some of the songs:
“Sinister Kid” by The Black Keys. “That’s me, that’s me – the boy with the broken halo. The devil won’t let me be …”
“Broken” by Livingstone. “Broken in silence, I adore you …”
“Fix You” by Coldplay.
“If You Only Knew” by Shinedown.
“Arms” by Christina Perri.
“A Drop in the Ocean,” by Ron Pope. *I enjoyed listening to this song very much.
“Sigh No More,” by Mumford and Sons.
“Entre tus alas,” by Camila.
“In the End,” by Snow Patrol.
“For The First Time,” by The Script.
“I Love You,” by Sarah McLachlan.
“Cloudbusting,” by Kate Bush.
“Amazed,” by Lonestar.
Thank you to everyone who sent a suggestion. I invite more musical recommendations in the comments below.
In light of the Professor’s passion for museums (and their inherent seductive possibilities), I’ll be posting a series of entries on the museums of the world, beginning tomorrow.
All the best and thanks for reading,

Not sure you’ll like it or think its suitable but ‘Hate Me’ by Blue October. Gabriel is a tortured soul and when Listening to the track I can quite easily relate it to him at his lowest. I actually went to see this band last week,he did an acoustic version and it was amazing. Much love as always. Pam. (bigapple)

Good morning dear S♥R,
It’s been a long time my friend n’est’ce pas? I thought I’d give it a try and suggest a few songs.
They all are meaningful for various reasons…could be the lyrics, could be the singer’s voice and/or the music…but all evoke an emotion one way or another and takes me down memory lane when either thinking of Gabriel, Julianna and even a little ‘eggroll’ if you get me drift ☺
Here you go:
Lavinia – The Veils
‘That I don’t want to live in your side
Though the rose is vermillion
And I find it so hard to survive
Without when within you’
Seconds of pleasure – Van Hunt
‘It’s the shine of a precious pearl
Light of the world
It’s the smile of our baby girl
It’s finding a moment for a thought so pure
It’s a walk along the shore’
Grounds for divorce – Elbow
Mostly for the beat of the music but the lyrics are very profound and meaningful. The song is literally about the nearly three years the band stopped making music and what they went through with the loss of their friend over that time, eventually reaching finality by getting over their depression and being truly able to celebrate life , rather than obsess over his death. The whole idea of being able of moving on…
Have a listen…you won’t be disappointed.
Best,
Jolie

Thanks everyone for these great suggestions. I’ll need to craft another soundtrack to incorporate them!

OMG I am so old school but this book needs a
Big sweeping dramatic music of titanic proportion like…
“It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” by Celine Dion
I love the variations of the music to this song, the passionate high, the anger, and softer chords–it’s the internal struggle conveyed. 🙂

How about Respighi’s Trittico Botticelliano? Seems appropriate since the paintings that inspired the work are all at the Uffizi. 🙂

I love so many of the songs suggested by your readers. And I love the music included in the novel as well. I have nothing new to add, but I will keep thinking on it. Hmm, I think I need to read GI again. Perhaps I’ll wait for the sequel to come out first.

Hello TongueTwied and Nix,
Thanks for your comments and suggestion.

I would like to suggest two songs:
– Sing for absolution by Muse.
– I only Have Eyes For You by Mina (original song by The Flamingos). I prefer this version because I think is full of sensuality and summarizes the admiration of Julia by Gabriel when she contemplates him. Ana

Almost anything by Zero 7 would work and maybe even some songs by Morcheeba.

Have you heard the song from Phillip Phillips HOME.. I love it and think about how Gabriel wants to make a home for Julia.
Efrat Noy says
Sarah McLachlan’s sweet voice singing ‘Angel’ came to mind when reading Gabriel and Julia’s first meeting in the orchard. It resonated even more after both their stories magically unfolded.
In the arms of the angel
fly away from here
from this dark cold hotel room
and the endlessness that you fear
you are pulled from the wreckage
of your silent reverie
you’re in the arms of the angel
may you find some comfort here

I know SR states that he was looking for songs beyond those mentioned in the novel, but I can’t believe Dave Matthews Band didn’t get a mention in this playlist! In addition to the sublime “Lying in the Hands of God” referenced in the novel, I think Loving Wings is more than appropriate ….
You lightly lifted me away
Out of a darkness, cold and gray
And I work beneath the midday sun
My cool blue water you have come
I give to you my everything
You’ve given me these loving wings
And angels have all gathered round
to hear me sing my love out loud (oh…)
So take your place here next to me
And I’ll take my place there next to thee
And no matter how far we may roam
Its by your side I make my home
Perfect!
Grace Cyrstalline says
If I have to let go of my dreams
Become someone I never thought I’d be
If that’s love then I want no part
if that’s love by Laura Pausini. She’s an Italian singer
But if you’re gonna be the kinda man
Who’s willing just to take me as I am
If that’s love then you’ve got my heart
Tell me in your arms I’ll be safe
Where loneliness and fear have no place
The only thing you have to do
The only thing I ask of you
Is give your heart, your soul, and your faith
And if you cannot give these things to me
Then I just have to tell you honestly
If that’s love then I want no part
Lisa Kenny says
“Demons” by Imagine Dragons
When the days are cold
And the cards all fold
And the saints we see
Are all made of gold
When your dreams all fail
And the ones we hail
Are the worst of all
And the blood’s run stale
I wanna hide the truth
I wanna shelter you
But with the beast inside
There’s nowhere we can hide
No matter what we breed
We still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come
This is my kingdom come
When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
At the curtain’s call
It’s the last of all
When the lights fade out
All the sinners crawl
So they dug your grave
And the masquerade
Will come calling out
At the mess you’ve made
Don’t wanna let you down
But I am hell bound
Though this is all for you
Don’t wanna hide the truth
No matter what we breed
We still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come
This is my kingdom come
When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
They say it’s what you make
I say it’s up to fate
It’s woven in my soul
I need to let you go
Your eyes, they shine so bright
I wanna save that light
I can’t escape this now
Unless you show me how
When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide

I love Michel Legrand’s song, “I Was Born In Love With You.”
I was born in love with you.
Opened my eyes in love with you.
From another time, from another place, from another world I remembered your face.
I walked to find the way to you.
Learned how to speak to say to you:
“Stay with me now through the mists of forever!”
I was born in love with you.
First saw the sun in love with you.
My eyes knew your smile, my hand knew your hand, my
lips and the taste of your kiss before I kissed you.
I will die in love with you. I’ll close my eyes in love with you.
Stay with me now through the mists of forever.
I’ll be born in love with you.
Hope you like it, SR! Have a great weekend, and may your angel muse be with you. 🙂

I have a song that makes me feel relaxed when I’m reading and because I feel the song is sexy…. Don Diablo – Give It All, the rhythm it’s precious. I also have a full playlist on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7c_aLJF4MU&list=RDNs8VsQ8TKHs < that’s my favorite song of the playlist. I also love Kingdom by Dave Gahan. I like your choices too.

While reading the books I loved the music Consequences by Camila Cabello the orchestra version. And it seems up a lot of their relationship.
