Dear Everyone,
I’ve been hearing from readers who were affected by Hurricane Sandy. The devastation is incredible.
I hope that you, your family and friends are safe.
As we look toward the clean up process, there are a number of charities that can help. First, the Red Cross. In addition to providing immediate help to those in need, they are accepting donations and running blood drives. Please consider giving.
Second, the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army is offering emergency disaster services already, including food, shelter, and clothing. They need donations and volunteers. Please consider giving.
Third, Covenant House. I’m including them because their house in Atlantic City, New Jersey had to be evacuated. Covenant House provides a safe place for teens in crisis, many of whom are running from abusive households. If you can, please consider giving to the Atlantic City Covenant House to help them continue to provide a home for their youth.
In addition to these charities, many local governments, faith-based groups, and humanitarian organizations are putting together teams of volunteers to help with disaster relief. Please consider giving of your time. Please consider becoming a sticky little leaf for someone in need.
All the best and thank you,
SR

SR, I have never seen (or lived through) such devastation and fear as I have these past few days. Lives are changed forever in AC and NYC. There are no words that adequately describe it. Thank you for mentioning Covenant House. I am particularly worried about the kids of Sandy, many who thought they were going to die last night. Their trauma breaks my heart. Thanks for putting the word out for much needed help, both here and on Twitter. At this time, kindness is precious to those who are stunned and hurting. We as your readers listen to your messages of charity. They are not empty pleas. I am blessed to have gotten through it shaken but safe and ok, however so many are not and they need us to help if we can. Volunteers will be needed as well for those who live in the tri-state area of PA/NJ/NY. Massive damage.

As a nurse on the other side of the country, I wish I could be there to work shoulder to shoulder with you. My prayers though are more affective than my own efforts, so know that I’m praying for you and the kids, kind lady.

Thanks, Pat – very kind of you to comment. A bunch of us will be volunteering at a pet-friendly shelter in NJ this weekend, so I appreciate your prayers for those affected. You are very sweet to pray for me, too.

Thank you so much for posting this, SR. The devastation in the tri-state area is unprecedented. Homes, businesses, and in the worst cases, lives have been lost. Charities will have their resources strained while helping the thousands of victims. They will need whatever donations anyone can make.
For anyone who was fortunate to escape Sandy’s wrath, please donate to one of the many charities who are helping. The Red Cross is an excellent place to start. Many people were already barely subsisting because of the poor economy. Your help could save their lives.

Thank you for posting for this, SR. I feel fortunate that damage in my area on LI has been minimal but many others on LI & NYC have not been so fortunate. We are still without power but my mother has power so we are spending the night after 2 nights in the dark. Thank you for thinking of us!
